When to use a blur

Soften and dream

A light blur smooths harsh detail and gives photos a soft, dreamy look.

Backgrounds for text

A stronger blur turns a busy photo into a calm backdrop that headings and buttons can sit on.

Hiding detail

Blur obscures fine detail, but a light blur can still be readable. Don't rely on it to hide sensitive information.

Frequently asked questions

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. The blur is applied inside your browser, so your image never leaves your device and nothing is stored on our servers.

What does the blur amount mean?

It sets how far each pixel is blended with its neighbours, so higher values give a softer, stronger blur and 0 leaves the image unchanged. The tool uses a stack blur, a fast approximation of a Gaussian blur.

Which file types can I use, and what do I get back?

You can add PNG, JPG, GIF and WebP images. The result is always downloaded as a PNG. For animated GIFs, only the first frame is used.

Why was my large image made smaller?

To keep your browser responsive, images longer than 4000 pixels on their longest side are scaled down before editing. The file name bar under the preview shows the original and resized dimensions.

Can I blur just one part of the picture?

Not with this tool. The blur is applied to the whole image. For a selective blur, such as a single face or area, use an image editor that supports masks or brushes.

How do I compare the blurred image with the original?

Press and hold the Compare button to show the original image, then let go to see your blurred version again. On a keyboard, hold the Space or Enter key while the button is focused.
