Building a good form

Keep field names simple

The field name is what your script receives, so use short names like email or phone with no spaces.

Ask only what you need

Every extra field puts people off. Mark only the important fields as required.

Validate on the server

Browser checks are a convenience. Always check and clean every value again on your server before using it.

Frequently asked questions

Does the form send emails by itself?

No. The generator makes the form’s HTML only. To receive the answers you need a script on your server (PHP, for example) that reads the submitted fields, and you put its address in the “Form action” box. A form without a server script does nothing when submitted.

What is the difference between Bootstrap and plain HTML?

Bootstrap adds the usual Bootstrap 5 classes such as form-control and mb-3, so the form looks right on a site that already uses Bootstrap. Plain HTML has simple class names (field, option, help) that you can style yourself.

Can I come back to my form later?

Yes. Your form is saved in this browser while you work. For a copy you can keep or move to another computer, press Get JSON, save the file, and use Load JSON later to bring it back.

What are XML and JSON for?

They describe the form fields as data rather than as a web page. Use them to save your work, share it, or feed it to your own scripts. JSON saved from this tool can be loaded back in with Load JSON.

How do I move fields around?

Drag the grip on the left of a field and drop it where you want it. If you prefer the keyboard or a touch screen, use the up and down arrow buttons on each field.

Is the form protected against spam?

The generated form has no spam protection of its own. Add a captcha or a hidden honeypot field on your server, and always check every submitted value on the server, not only in the browser.

Is anything uploaded?

No. The builder runs entirely in your browser and your form is never sent to our server.
